National Pie Week: Cheese & Onion Pie
Our second entry for our celebration of British Pie Week is the humble Cheese & Onion Pie. We chose this one today as it’s a ‘Cheese & Onion Pie’ kind of day; cold, windy, wet.
It’s the ultimate comfort food, especially for Stuart and the Miller family; this recipe comes from Stuart’s Mum and is a family favourite.
Made with not one, but two Yorkshire Cheeses! Yorkshire Wensleydale which is a crumbly cheese and helps it hold its structure, and Yorkshire Cheddar, which gives it a punch of flavour and a melty texture. Both are from Wensleydale Creamery located in Hawes in neighbouring Wensleydale.
It has a kick of crushed black pepper to give it a bit of extra warmth, along with the balance of onions to finish it off. It’s one of two vegetarian options for the pies but is a massive hit with both meat lovers and veggies. All our pie crusts are made with vegetable shortening, and as is proper, totally encases this indulgent feast.
This is a serious must try if you need a bit of loving kindness and a big cheesy hug at the end of a long day.
Pro tip: It goes REALLY well with a big bowl of our homemade chips with ketchup and mayo!
